1 Probably not an established resident in the British Isles with just two confirmed records from S.E.England and last reliably recorded in 1903 (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
1a Raised to generic level by Lohse (1963).
2 Zanetti (1987) used the name Lathrimaeum for this genus, because he considred that the type species of Anthobium is a species of Eusphalerum. However, current usage of Anthobium has been conserved by redesignation of the type species (Herman, 2001a).
2a Current usage of this name has been conserved by redesignation of its type species (Herman, 2001a).
2b A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
3 Regarded as a subspecies by Zanetti (1987), but merely as a synonym by Hansen (1996).
3a An application has been made to the ICZN to place this name on the official list of rejected names (Herman, 2001a).
3b A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
4 Resident native in Scottish Highlands, but last recorded in 1964 (Hyman, 1994).
5 Name conserved by ICZN Op. 1722
6 Tottenham (1954) used this name for A. minuta, which had been recently found for the first time in Britain (Steel, 1957), although Joy (1932) used the name for the more widespread A. sulcula.
7 Raised to generic rank by Steel (1970) and most contemporary authors, though still combined with Hapalaraea by Silfverberg (1992) and Poole & Gentili (1996).
8 Raised to generic rank by Steel (1970), though not by subsequent authors with the exception of Pope (1977).
9 Synonymy appears in Zanetti (1987).
10 Synonymised in Hammond (1996).
10a A junior homonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002a).
10b A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
11 Raised to generic rank by Steel (1970) and most contemporary authors, though still combined with Phloeonomus by Silfverberg (1992).
12 Raised to generic rank by Steel (1970) and most contemporary authors, though still combined with Phloeonomus by Silfverberg (1992) and Poole & Gentili (1996).
12a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
13 A junior homonym but the subject of an application to ICZN to conserve its use (Herman, 2001a).
13a The type series of brunnipennis is conspecific with depressus (Hammond, pers. comm.), so this name cannot be used to replace concinnus as suggested by Hansen (1996).
14 Both a junior synonym and homonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b). Formerly resident in East Kent; last recorded in 1950 (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
15 Added by Lott (1989); possibly a recent introduction to the British Isles from southern Europe.

1 Synonymised by Zerche (1998).
2 Replacement due to Cuccodoro & Löbl (1997).
2a Cuccodoro & Löbl (1997) have transferred this name from what is now known as M. prosseni. Consequently, great care needs to be taken in interpreting the name depressus in the literature and it is recommended that when using this name in future, it should be quoted as ‘depressus (=sinuatocollis)’.
3 First replaced with the name serrifer (Muona, 1977), which was later synonymised by Gusarov (1992).

staphylinoides (Marsham, 1802)
1 Appears as a separate genus in Coiffait (1982b). This treatment has been followed by Herman (2001b), but not by other authors.
2 Only recorded on one occasion in historical times when found "sparingly" in Co. Kerry, Ireland (Joy & Tomlin, 1909).
Formerly regarded as a separate family, the Pselaphinae were placed within the Omaliinae group of Staphylinidae by Newton & Thayer (1995), who translated the former subfamily classification of Newton & Thayer (1992) into a supertribe classification. Hansen (1997) downgraded these supertribes into tribes, while relegating the existing tribal classification of Newton & Thayer (1992) to subtribal level. The differences in the two tribal classifications only affect one British supertribe, the Goniaceritae (formerly Goniacerinae). In view of the possible paraphyletic nature of this taxon (Newton & Thayer, 1995), it would seem prudent to adhere to the older tribal classification in which it is split. Tribes and subtribes are arranged in a traditional order adapted to be consistent with the phylogenetic analysis of Newton & Thayer (1995).

1 The species in this genus have been confused in the British literature in the past. Names in old lists should be interpreted with caution.
2 The species in this genus have been confused in the British literature up until very recently. Names in old lists should be interpreted with caution.
3 Added by Bowestead & Eccles (1987).
4 Subspecific status reaffirmed by Besuchet (1998).
5 Formerly resident in Kent; last recorded in 1943 (Allen, 1994b). This name has been frequently misapplied to E. bescidicus by British authors including Pearce (1957).
6 Former resident?; only known from Moray (Scotland) and Oxfordshire, and last recorded in the 1920s (Hyman, 1994).
7 Raised from subspecific rank by Besuchet (1989).
8 Added by Johnson & Eccles (1983).
9 Resident or immigrant?; only known from 1 specimen found in South Devon in 1957 (Pearce, 1974).
9a Considered to be a intraspecific male form of longicornis by Besuchet (1989), but regarded as a separate species by Odegaard (2001).
10 Löbl (1998) considered this name to be a junior synonym of hipponensis (Saulcy) because he mistakenly believed the date of publication to be 1882. In fact Rye (1869) had published the name earlier to replace simplex (Waterhouse) which was preoccupied.
11 Resident native, known from several counties in S. England and S. Wales, last recorded in 1945 (Hyman, 1994).

1 Prior to Hammond (1973), this name was also used for three other closely related species, which were then unrecognised.
2 Added by Booth (1988).
3 The subgenus Palporus was created for this species by Campbell (1979).
4 Species groups have been recognised by Ullrich (1975).
5 Formerly used as a subgenus, but synonymised by Campbell (1973).
6 Former widespread resident in S.E. England; last recorded in the 1930s (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
7 Synonymy appears in Lohse (1989). The Scottish paratype is also conspecific with pallipes (Hammond, pers. comm.)
8 Former widespread resident in England; last recorded in the 1950s (Hyman, 1994).
9 Formerly treated as a subgenus of Mycetoporus, but raised to full generic rank by Campbell (1991).
10 Raised to generic rank by Campbell (1993).
11 Lectotype designated by Schülke (1999), establishing synonymy with Quedius scitus (Gravenhorst, 1806). All uses of the name Bolitobius analis (Fabricius) are therefore misidentifications.
12 Transferred from Bolitobius by Assing & Schülke (2001).

The list of tribes follows Ashe (1998) which differs from Newton & Thayer (1992) only in the downgrading of the Actocharini. The arrangement of tribes largely follows Silfverberg (1992), but is reordered to reflect the relationships and affinities discussed by Ashe (1991, 1998). Many subtribal names appear in the literature, mainly in treatments of the North American fauna. It is beyond the scope of this work to apply them to the European fauna and so they are abandoned altogether.

Tribe ATHETINI Casey, 1910
The generic limits in this tribe are in urgent need of review and are likely to be fluid for the foreseeable future. Seevers’ (1978) treatment of the North American fauna is difficult to apply in Britain because of taxonomic advances since its publication and large faunal differences between America and Europe. However, his approach of splitting the huge genus Atheta is here applied by raising the ranks of the subgenera recognised in various European works (Silfverberg 1992, Freude et al. 1974 updated by Lohse 1989). Unfortunately, there are inconsistencies between the checklists published in Central Europe and Scandinavia (see e.g. Lohse 1985a, 1987; Muona 1987) and these are noted as they occur. In the absence of any widely accepted view on relationships between genera in this tribe, the order of genera mainly follows traditional arrangements in Freude et al. (1974) and Pope (1977).

1 ?Endemic (Hammond, 1996); only known from four 19th century specimens, 3 without data and 1 from Sherwood Forest (Nottinghamshire) (Kevan, 1968).
2 Status uncertain; 1 specimen recorded from the Isle of Wight in 1882 (Kevan, 1968) and 5 from S.W. Ireland before 1930 (Bullock, 1930).
3 Resident native; only known from 3 specimens found in Oxfordshire in 1853 (Kevan, 1968).
4 This name is now used for a species in the Athetine genus Nehemitropia (Zerche, 1991).
5 Former resident in S.E. England, but not recorded since 1970 (Hyman, 1994).
6 Added by Williams (1990).
7 This synonymy appears in an update of the Central European list (Lohse, 1989) and is followed in other checklists.
8 Former resident in S.E. England; last recorded in 1941 (Hyman, 1994).
8a Synonymised by Assing & Schülke (2001).
9 Status uncertain; only known from 2 specimens, last recorded in 1913 (Hyman, 1994). The generic placement of this species awaits review following the raising of Cousya to generic status by Assing & Schülke (2001).
9a Raised to generic rank by Assing & Schülke (2001).
10 Status uncertain; only known from three records; last recorded in 1939 (Hyman, 1994).
11 Added by Williams (1979b); possibly a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
12 Species groups have been identified by Assing (1996a).
13 Added by Lott (1993a).
14 Added by Owen (1994).
15 Listed as a synonym of Ocyusa by Poole & Gentili (1996), even though its generic status has long been established in Europe and even though Seevers (1978) suggested that it was distinct.
16 Synonymised by Assing (1999b).
17 Former resident in S.E. England?; last recorded in 1915 (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
18 Synonymised by Lohse (1984).
19 Status uncertain; only known from one specimen found in Leicestershire in 1941 (Hyman, 1994).
20 Added by Booth (1999); possibly a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
21 Reidentified by Whitehead (1994).
22 Formerly resident in S. Hants and the Isle of Wight; last recorded in 1909 (Hyman, 1994).
23 Status uncertain; only known from one record from S. Devon prior to 1913 (Hyman, 1994).
24 Species groups have been identified by Muona (1991).
25 Added by Owen (1982) [as M. lohsei]. Before 1976, this name was misapplied to M. anglica by British coleopterists.
26 ?Endemic (Hammond,1996); resident native, widespread in Britain, on river banks (Hyman, 1994).
27 Vogel in Assing et al. (1998) continued to use this name, although Muona (1979b) considered that it was a nomen dubium and used the name apicalis.
27a According to Assing & Schülke (2001), following Nikitsky et al. (1998), this is a senior synonym of both M. apicalis and M. capitalis.
28 The type species of Tachyusa and Ischnopoda were set by ICZN op. 600. Assing et al. (1998) raised three of the subgenera listed here to generic rank.
28a British specimens exhibited by Hodge (2003) [as Tachyusa objecta].
29 A 20th Century immigrant to the British Isles.
29a The name as first used by Scheerpeltz (1968) is unavailable, and the correct authorship was established by Assing & Schülke (2001).
30 Formerly grouped with genera within the Athetini, but transferred to the Oxypodini by Lohse (1989) and Hansen (1996).
31 Former resident; only known from four localities in S.E. England, last recorded c.1920 (Hyman, 1994).
32 Synonymised by Assing (in press).
33 Added by Owen (1990a).
34 Synonymised by Assing & Schülke (2001).
35 Added by Allen & Eccles (1988) [as Hydrosmectina delicatissima].
36 Allen (1992), following Lohse (1988), replaced H. subtilissima in the British list with this name, but it is unclear whether he examined any British examples.
37 Reidentified by Lott (1993b).
38 Added by Last (1980); British status uncertain; a southern European species only known from one specimen found in S. Devon in 1932.
39 Added by Hammond (1981).
40 Raised to generic rank by Muona (1979a) and Köhler & Klausnitzer (1998), though not by Assing & Schülke (2001).
41 Before Last (1952), this name was misapplied to A. longicollis.
42 Before Last (1952), this name was misapplied to A. coulsoni.
43 Synonymised by Muona (1990).
44 Synonymised by Williams (1979a).
45 Replaced by Zerche (1991).
46 The inclusion here of several species listed in Lohse's Atheta 'Mischgruppe II' follows Silfverberg (1992). This accords with the recent use of the name Alaobia for A. sparreschneideri in North America (Lohse et al., 1990), but does not accord with Seevers (1978), who regarded Mycota Mulsant & Rey, of which A. pallidicornis is the type species by synonymy with A. humeralis, as a synonym of Xenota. Likovský in Boháč (1993) retained most of these species in Mycota as a separate subgenus of Atheta.
46a British specimens exhibited by Hodge (2003) [as Atheta linderi].
47 Formerly included in Atheta subgenus Actophylla.
47a An application has been made to the ICZN to conserve this name through suppression of the name Evanystes Gistel (Gusarov, 2003).
48 Resident native known from several sites in Scotland and S. England, but last recorded from the Scottish Highlands in 1925.
48a Synonymy appears in Muona (1979) and is followed by subsequent checklists.
49 Listed as a subspecies by Muona (1979) but as a synonym by Assing & Schülke (2001).
50 Synonymy confirmed by Assing & Schülke (1999).
51 Placed in Atheta by Poole & Gentili (1996), though assigned to Liogluta by all recent European authors and Seevers (1978).
52 The promotion of this taxon from a subgenus of Atheta to full generic status was proposed by Muona (1995). Species groups have been recognised by Brundin (1943).
53 In Strand & Vik (1964), this name was misapplied to P. malleus.
54 Synonymised by Muona (1995).
55 This is the type species of Dralica, which was retained as a separate subgenus of Atheta by Likovský in Boháč (1993).
56 Synonymised by Lohse (1988).
57 A recent introduction to the British Isles, probably originating in North America or the southern hemisphere (Hammond, 1996).
58 Synonymised by Benick (1970); formerly placed in Microdota.
58a Kevan (1963) placed this species in Atheta subgenus Amidobia. Muona (1979b) found that the species had been misinterpreted by Brundin (1948), who, according to Assing et al. (1998), confused it with A. puberula, a species assigned to Anopleta by Benick (1970).
59 Formerly placed in Microdota but transferred to Anopleta by Benick (1970).
60 Described as new to science by Allen (1994a); putative endemic but status requires confirmation (Hammond, 1996); only known from the unique type specimen taken in Hertfordshire in 1930.
61 Species groups have been identified by Brundin (1948).
62 Former resident, known from several counties in S.E. England, but last recorded in the 1920s?
63 In Joy (1932) this name was misapplied to Anopleta soedermani.
64 Added (reinstated) by Allen (1994a); only certainly known from a record of 1 specimen taken in the New Forest (S. Hants.) in 1931; in Joy (1932) this name was misapplied to M. glabricula.
65 In Joy (1932) this name was misapplied to Microdota atricolor.
66 Status uncertain; only known from specimens found in Surrey in 1922 (Hyman, 1994).
66a Synonymy by Benick (1974) confirmed by Muona (1979b).
67 Former resident in southern England; not recorded since 1970 (Hyman, 1994).
68 These species were transferred from Lohse's Atheta 'Mischgruppe II' in Muona (1979a), but this change has not been followed by Lohse (1989).
69 Added by Owen (1983) [as Atheta hansseni].
70 This genus does not occur in Scandinavia nor North America. Its use here follows Brundin (1940) and Likovský in Boháč (1993), and accords with practice elsewhere in this checklist, even if it is not used by Freude et al. (1974) or Lohse (1989).
71 Raised to generic rank here from its subgeneric status in Silfverberg (1992), although it was synonymised with Xenota by Seevers (1978) and is not recognised in Central Europe.
72 Synonymised to Xenota by Muona (1979a) and Likovský in Boháč (1993), though Silfverberg (1992) later reversed Muona’s synonymy; Carter & Owen (1987) listed M. gilvicollis Scheerpeltz as a British species, although there are no published British records for this species, whose taxonomic status in any case requires further scrutiny preferably as part of a wider study of the M. fungi species group.(Assing & Schülke, 2001).
73 Hodge & Jones (1995) reported that some British records of M. clientula were referable to M. negligens (Mulsant & Rey), but provided no supporting evidence.
74 Listed on its own in Atheta subgenus Datostiba by Likovský in Boháč (1993).
75 In Joy (1932) and Strand & Vik (1964), this name was misapplied to D. dadopora.
76 In Joy (1932), this name was misapplied to D. nigra.
77 Many of these species may be referable to the genus Stethusa Casey, 1910, which is accorded full generic status by Seevers (1978) and Poole & Gentili (1996).
78 Used as a subgenus of Atheta by Likovský in Boháč (1993) for A. liturata and A. nigritula.
79 Added by Lyszkowski (1992).
80 Listed by Pope (1977) but first formally recorded by Allen (1994a).
81 The list below, assigned for now to Atheta, is made up of various species that were placed in Lohse's 'Mischgruppen I and III/IV' in Atheta sensu lato (Freude et al., 1974). It contains a number of species groups that are not necessarily closely related, and which await a proper revision of generic relationships within the Athetini. In American lists, the genus Xenota is an equivalent ragbag of species (Seevers, 1978, Poole & Gentili, 1996). In Silfverberg (1992) most of these species are placed in Atheta s. str., where they are mixed with genuine Atheta s. str. species.
82 Replacement due to Muona (1979b).
83 Status uncertain; only known from 1 specimen collected in Yorkshire in 1967 (Hyman, 1994).
84 Listed by Pope (1977) but first formally recorded by Allen (1994a). Known from only 1 specimen recorded in Herefordshire in 1936.
86 Several authors comment that this is not an Atheta (see e.g. Muona, 1979b), but it has never been ascribed to another genus.
87 Included in Dimetrota by Brundin (1963) and subsequent Fennoscandian checklists, but not by Freude et al. and subsequent Central European works.
88 British status uncertain; only known from the Scottish Highlands and last recorded in 1930 (Hyman, 1994).
89 Placed in the genus Plataraea by Muona (1979a), but not by Lohse (1985a).
90 The creation of this genus for Atheta laticollis (Stephens) has been followed in Scandinavia (Silfverberg, 1992), but not in Central Europe.
91 Status uncertain; recorded only from Norfolk before 1970 (Hyman, 1994).
92 The American concept of this genus is much wider than that used here. It includes a number of species whose relationships are unclear and which in Europe would be placed in Atheta sensu lato.
93 Several species here retained in Dimetrota were transferred to Atheta s. str. by Muona (1979a). They are best reassigned to new genera after a proper revision. The traditional concept of Dimetrota has been threatened by the identification of Cadaverota cadaverina as the type species (Muona 1979b), but Lohse & Smetana (1985) argued that D. marcida was the correct type species.
93a The true identity of this species was established by Lohse & Smetana (1985).
94 Synonymised by Lott (2002).
95 Treated as separate from Dimetrota by Muona (1979a) and Baranowski (1982), though not by Lohse (1989). Synonymised with Atheta rather than Dimetrota by Poole & Gentili (1996).
96 Regarded as a subgenus of Acrotona by Seevers (1978).
97 Species groups have been identified by Brundin (1952).
98 Former resident in S.W. England, last recorded in 1957 (Hyman, 1994).
99 Synonymised by Allen (1994a).
99a According to Assing & Schülke (2001), following Nikitsky et al. (1998), this is a senior synonym of A. consanguinea.
99b Listed as British by Hammond (2000) on the basis of an as yet unpublished revision of the British species of Halobrecta.
100 Possibly endemic resident (Hammond, 1996).
101 Added by Heal (1993); a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
102 Most subgenera are assigned to full generic rank by Seevers (1978), but this practice has not been followed by recent authors (e.g. Maus et al., 2000). Subgenera and species names follow Welch (1997), except where indicated.
103 Added by Welch (1969) [as A. verna]. This species was misidentified as A. pauxilla by Lohse (1974).
104 Reidentified by Welch (1990b).
105 Added by Owen (1990b) [as A. pauxilla].
106 Synonymised by Maus (2001).
107 Synonymised by Welch (1997).
108 Replacement due to Likovský (1984).
109 Formerly widespread in England and Scotland, but not recorded since 1965 (Welch, 1997).
110 Combined with Emplenota in Welch (1997), but its distinctness was emphasised by Maus et al. (2000).
111 This name has been previously misapplied to A. punctatella (Lohse, 1985b).
112 Only known from the unique type specimen taken in Dorset in 1937 (Welch, 1997); possibly an exotic immigrant, but taxonomic status requires confirmation (Hammond, 1996).
112a Previously placed in the tribe Hoplandriini, but both Welch (1997) and Maus et al. (2001) comment that T. morion is closely related to or even congeneric with Aleochara.
113 Only known from one specimen collected near Bournemouth (Dorset / S. Hants.) in 1865 (Hyman, 1994).
114 A tropical and subtropical species whose presence in the British Isles is possibly sustained by frequent importation (Hammond, 1987), but which has bred in the wild on at least several occasions (Jones, 2001).
115 Hammond (1974) listed this species as a recent introduction, possibly originating from E. Asia, although Horion (1967) suggested that it arrived in Europe during a post-glacial warm period.
115a Listed as Myrmecoporus sp. by Hammond (2000); see note below.
116 Added by Assing (1997a), but considered to be the true brevipes by Hammond (2000) and listed as such in his list of British coastal Staphylinidae.
117 Synonymised by Assing (1999c).
117a According to Assing & Schülke (2001), following Nikitsky et al. (1998), this is a senior synonym of G. angustata.
118 In Joy (1932) this name is misapplied to G. congrua.
119 Status uncertain; only known from two specimens taken in Cambridgeshire in 1967 (Welch, 2000).
120 Added by Welch (2000).
121 Added by Welch (1998).
122 Added by Owen (1991).
123 Probably an introduced species originating from North America (Hammond, 1996).
124 Taxonomic status doubtful (Hammond, 1996); only known from the unique type specimen taken in Hertfordshire in 1930.
124a Usage conserved by designation of L. pulchella as type species (Gusarov & Herman, 2002).
125 Added by Booth (1999); possibly a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
126 Placed in Hygroecia (= Philhygra) by Joy (1932).
127 British records require confirmation (Hyman, 1994).
128 Added by Welch (1995).
129 Probably an introduced species originating from South America (Williams, 1980).
130 Regarded as a long-winged form of O. brachyptera by Pope (1977), but raised to specific rank in most European works.
131 Regarded as a good species by Lohse (1989).
132 Synonymised by Good (1998).
133 Correct name established by Good (1998).
Formerly regarded as a separate family, but incorporated into the Staphylinidae as a subfamily on grounds of larval morphology by Kasule (1966). This approach was supported by Lawrence & Newton (1982) and adopted by most subsequent authors except for Hansen (1997). Tribal classification and arrangement follows Löbl (1997).

1 Name conserved by ICZN Op. 1722.
3 Only known in Britain from 2 specimens, from Surrey in 1875 and the New Forest (S. Hants.) in 1912 (Allen, 1970, Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
4 Herman (1986) used species groups in his world revision rather than existing subgenera. However, allocation of species to subgenera is possible for all British species using Herman's (op. cit.) table of equivalency on p. 101.
5 Name replacement due to Herman (1986).
5a British populations were referred to this subspecies by Hammond (2000).
6 Listed as a homonym by Muona (1979a) and subsequent authors, but now the subject of an application to the ICZN to conserve its use (Herman, 2001a).
6a British populations were referred to this subspecies by Hammond (2000).
7 A junior homonym but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002a).
8 The specific status of B. praetermissus was re-established by Lohse (1982), but in many recent checklists it is used as a replacement name for B. atricapillus rather than as a separate species.
9 Herman (1986) discussed the problems of defining limits between the species related to B. pallipes. Confirmation of the specific status of B. fuscipes, B. annae and other taxa awaits a review of the western Palaearctic species.
9a The distinctness of this species from B. pallipes is not widely recognised outside Britain and is in need of review. Several authors including Anderson et al. (1997) have followed Pope (1977) in using this name in a wider sense to include B. pallipes s.str. when referring to the British fauna, as did Herman (1986), while continuing to use the name pallipes in listing the continental fauna.
10 This name was misapplied in part by Horion (1963) to B. pallipes.
11 All British records were referred to B. annae in Pope (1977), but B. pallipes was listed as a separate species by Herman (1986) and this name is now applied to one of the more frequently encountered species of the subgenus in Western Europe.
12 Synonymy appears in Hammond (1996), but this needs reassessment as a result of recent work on types by Makranczy & Schülke (2001).
13 Possibly endemic (Hammond, 1996); resident native, known from several sites in Scotland, N. England and Wales (Hyman, 1994).
14 Added by Lott (1993c).
15 Synonymised by Schülke (1998).
15a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Schülke & Makranczy, 2003).
16 Regarded as a subspecies by Muona (1979a), but merely treated as a synonym by Schülke in Assing & Schülke (1999).
17 An introduced species possibly originating from New Zealand (Hammond, 1974).
18 Species list based on Makranczy (2001).
19 Recognised for some time (P.M. Hammond, unpublished) but first formally listed in Boyce (1991) and Fowles & Boyce (1992).
20 A recent immigrant to England following a northward expansion of range in Europe (Horion 1963).
20a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
21 Added by Owen (1979).
21a Previous British records based on misidentifications, but listed by Hammond (2000) as British on the basis of additional, recently confirmed records.
21b Considered to be a subspecies of C. manchuricus (Bernhauer, 1938) by Gildenkov (2001).
22 An introduced species originating in New Zealand.
23 Added by Owen (1997); a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
24 Former widespread resident, last recorded in 1947 (Hyman, 1994).
24a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).

1 Puthz (1967) discussed the lack of compatibility between the subgenera listed here and a natural phylogenetic classification. However, these subgenera are well established and continue to be widely used as a matter of convenience to break up this species-rich genus into manageable groups.
1a Synonymised by Puthz (2001) on the grounds that, worldwide. several monophyletic species groups cut across the boundaries of these two former subgenera.
2 First registered as British by Shirt (1987).
2a British specimens exhibited by Booth in Hodge (2003).
3 Synonymised by Puthz (1974).
4 Added by Lott & Foster (1990) from central Ireland; not recorded from Britain.
5 Formerly resident in Northern Ireland, last recorded in 1983 and now believed to be extinct (Nelson & Anderson, 1999).
6 Synonymised by Puthz (1993).
8 Species groups have been recognised by Puthz (1968).
9 Originally proposed as a generic name (Ádám, 1987), but downgraded by Puthz (1999). Species groups have been recognised by Puthz (1972) [as Hemistenus].
10 S. brevipennis was considered to be a short-winged form of picipes by Puthz (1972), but Kevan & Allen (1961) argued that it was distinct.
10a This name was formerly applied to the subgenus Metastenus.
10b Synonymised by Ádám (1987) and followed by Herman (2001b).
11 Status uncertain; known only from 1 specimen collected in Midlothian, Scotland in 1920 (Kevan & Allen, 1961).

1 Combined with Paederus in North America (Poole & Gentili, 1996).
2 Former resident native, extinct; known from Merionethshire, Glamorgan and Devon, last recorded prior to 1870.
3 Synonymised by Gusarov (1991).
5 Former resident widespread in England, but not reliably recorded since 1970 (Hyman, 1994).
6 Species groups have been recognised by Coiffait (1984).
7 Formerly resident in southern England, but last recorded in 1968 (Hyman, 1994).
9 Combined with Lithocharis in North America (Poole & Gentili, 1996).
10 A recent immigrant to the British Isles originally spreading into Europe from E. Asia (Allen, 1962).
11 Suspected by Allen (1962) of being an immigrant species originating from Asia, but since recorded as a subfossil from six sites in Britain from the Neolithic period to the medieval period (Buckland et al., 1996). Drugmand (1994) regarded ochracea as a junior synonym of tricolor (Fabricius), although the latter name is traditionally applied to a species of Xantholinus.
12 Duff (1995) pointed out that Hypomedon and Chloecharis share the same type species, because Blackwelder (1939) designated Lithocharis debilicornis as the type species of Hypomedon. Most authors follow Bordoni (1975) in separating debilicornis from species now placed in Sunius, so Hypomedon should be removed from synonymy with Sunius.
13 Added by Drane (1994) [as Chloecharis debilicornis]; a recent immigrant to the British Isles.
14 Species groups have been allocated to subgenera by Coiffait (1984).
15 Former resident of Devon and Cornwall, last recorded in 1947 (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
16 Reidentified by Allen (1995b).
17 The subgenera listed here have been accorded generic rank by Coiffait (1982a), Assing & Schülke (2001) and Herman (in press).
18 Recognised as a genus in America (Poole & Gentili, 1996) and by several European authors.
19 Synonymised by Gusarov (1994).
20 Synonymised by Gusarov (1992).
21 A junior synonym with some contention over the correct name (Boháč, 1986, Gusarov, 1992, Assing & Zerche in Assing et al., 1998), but now the subject of an application to ICZN to conserve its use (Herman, in press).

1 Former resident, only known from Berkshire, Surrey and S. Hampshire and last recorded in 1933 (Hyman, 1994).
2 Species groups have been recognised by Coiffait (1974) and amended by Smetana (1995).
3 Accorded full generic status in Silfverberg (1992) following Coiffait (1974), but synonymised by Smetana (1995).
3a Allen (1970) drew attention to an old British record of P. albipes var. alpinus. However, Allen (op. cit.) never examined the specimen in question and P. alpinus was not listed as British by Pope (1977). Regarded as British by Hyman (1994) and Hodge & Jones (1995) on the basis of reports of a more recent unpublished record from Kent. However, it cannot be included in a British checklist on currently published evidence.
4 Added by Allen & Owen (1997); a recent introduction to the British Isles.
5 Ephemeral resident?, recorded on Suffolk coast in 1956 and 1957 (Hammond in Shirt, 1987).
6 The familiar use of the name immundus for this species is based on an early misidentification by Gyllenhal (Smetana & Herman, 1999).
7 Former widespread resident in England, last recorded in 1944 (Hyman, 1994).
8 A recent immigrant to the British Isles, originating from Japan (Smetana, 1995).
9 Only known in the British Isles from 1 specimen found in Buckinghamshire in 1902 (Hyman, 1994).
10 British status uncertain; known from only 4 specimens and last recorded in 1950 (Hyman, 1994).
11 Synonymised in Coiffait (1974).
12 Widespread in Ireland, but unrecorded in Britain (Lott & Bilton, 1991).
13 Introduced to the British list as a distinct species by Smetana (1966), but considered to be a variety by Coiffait (1972).
13a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
14 Possibly an immigrant to the British Isles (Hammond, 1982).
15 Genus re-established by Smetana (1995), who identified species groups.
16 An introduction to the British Isles, originating from E. Asia (Hammond, 1974).
17 Added by Owen (1993).
18 Transferred from Gabrius by Smetana (1995).
19 Species groups have been recognised by Coiffait (1974) and amended by Smetana (1995).
20 According to Silfverberg (1991) and Herman (2001a), subnigritulus Reitter, 1909 is unavailable and subnigritulus Joy is a different species.
21 Identified as a junior synonym of coxalus by Gusarov (1991), which in turn was synonymised by Schillhammer (1997).
22 Rare resident; only known from 10 specimens from 2 localities in Surrey and Cumbria; last recorded in 1965 (Hyman, 1994).
22a Status as separate genus questioned by Smetana (1995); included in Cafius by Hammond (2000).
22b Transferred to subgenus Matidus by Smetana & Davies (2000).
22c Synonymised by Smetana & Davies (2000).
22d Raised to generic rank by Coiffait (1974) but retained as subgenus by Smetana & Davies (2000).
23 Raised to generic rank by Coiffait (1974) and by Smetana & Davies (2000).
23a Raised to generic rank by Coiffait (1974) as Alapsodus Tottenham, but retained as subgenus by Smetana & Davies (2000).
24 Synonymised by Steel (1948).
25 First published British record appears in Owen (1989).
25a Whitehead (2002) followed Israelson (1979) in regarding this taxon as a subspecies of H. praevius, although this approach has not been adopted by other authors.
25b Regarded as a junior synonym by Schülke (1999), but an application to conserve the use of this name has been made to the ICZN (Herman 2001a).
26 A junior homonym (Tottenham, 1939), but the subject of an application to ICZN to conserve its use (Herman, 2001a).
27 Usage of simplicifrons follows Pope (1977) and Herman (2001b), although Bordoni (1976) regarded hispanicus as the correct name for the species that occurs in Britain.
27a A junior synonym, but the subject of a petition to the ICZN to conserve its usage (Herman, 2002b).
28 Synonymised by Assing (1999a).
28a Appears as a synonym in Pope (1977) following Korge (1963). Synonymy reaffirmed by Assing (1999a).
29 Added by Skidmore (1988).
30 Synonymised by Assing (1997b).
31 Probably originally introduced to Europe and the British Isles from West Africa (Hammond, 1982).
32 Added by Hammond (1982); a recent introduction to the British Isles probably originating in Asia.
33 Hodge & Jones (1995) used this name as a senior synonym of tricolor, but there is no published removal of the synonymy of P. pallidipennis with P. parumpunctatus (Herman, 2001b)
34 Considered to be a possible immigrant to the British Isles by Hammond (1982), but recorded as a subfossil from both the Roman and medieval periods in Buckland et al. (1996).
35 Regarded as a synonym by Pope (1977) and others until re-established as a good species by Lohse (1989). Again synonymised by Assing (1996b).
36 A proposal is being submitted to the ICZN to conserve usage of this name (Assing, 2003).
36a Raised to generic rank by Coiffait (1972).
36b Raised to generic rank by Coiffait (1972) as Phalacrolinus, which was later synonymised by Smetana (1982).
37 Replacement due to Drugmand (1994).
38 Drugmand’s (1994) interpretation of the identity of Fabricius' Staphylinus tricolor, as the species traditionally known as Lithocharis ochraceus was not accepted by Herman (2001a).
